- Establish a library and data base on best practices in civic engagement.
- Create and maintain a Web site on civic engagement concepts and practices, and advertise the Center’s services.
- Provide services to local governments, regional organizations, and companies interested in tapping public opinion:
- Assist in organizing public meetings.
- Facilitate public discussion groups:
- Determine issues.
- Select priorities.
- Design problem solutions.
- Counsel on preparation of objective public opinion surveys.
- Share data on civic engagement best practices.
- Publicize information on civics conferences offered elsewhere in the country.
- Provide referrals to consultants and other professionals with relevant skills.
- Organize conferences, town meetings, and symposia on regional or local issues:
- Initiate own events.
- Seek joint sponsorships with:
- Individual universities
- Chambers of commerce
- Hampton Roads Partnership
- Individual local governments, or groups of governments
- City business organizations (Greater Norfolk, Portsmouth Partnership,
Virginia Beach Vision, Greater Peninsula Now, etc.)
- Lecture (and publish) on civic engagement concepts and practices to:
- Schools
- Universities
- Business organizations
- Local governments and agencies
